A Practice in Listening to the Inner Voice of Love

When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

—John 21:9-14

Beloved,

I want to spend time with you, even in the most ordinary ways. When my beloved Son reappeared in all the glory of resurrected life, he didn’t draw attention to himself. He didn’t seek out his persecutors to set the story straight, establishing that he was victorious. No, he met the beloved disciples on the beach, around a fire, and cooked breakfast.

Every time you share a meal in my name, I am there with you. I am in the breaking of the bread, the frying up of fish, the pouring of coffee. This is the sacramental life. Recognizing my presence in all your human experiences. Receiving me in the mundane activities. Communing with me in the big and small aspects of your day.

When my beloved Son appeared to the disciples, Jesus showed them, once again, that the kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:15). My kingdom shows up in humble ways, starting with a simple invitation to awareness. Something as ordinary as, “Come and have breakfast.”
