A Blessing for Teachers Starting a New School Year

Picture by Christina of two girls lighting candles in the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela

As you begin your new school year

May God go ahead of you into your classrooms

To create spaces of nurture and creativity

Where God’s presence has made a home

A place of welcome and belonging

May Jesus walk among your school

Befriending every child who sets foot there

Letting them know the intimacy of friendship

May you encounter Christ as you look into your students’ faces

And may that encounter nourish what is thirsting in you

May you draw from a wellspring of grace

In moments of exhaustion and overwhelm

And may that grace surprise you

With how limitless and abundant God’s love really is

May this year teach and grow you in your life’s purpose

Turning knowledge into wisdom

Work into vocation

Care into compassion

May you find deep fulfillment in shaping these young lives

Helping to lay a foundation and planting seeds

That will blossom throughout each child’s lifetime

And may you be blessed in knowing

That God is delighting in you

And may you delight in every child you greet

Gifting them with the gift of their own divinity
